Preparatory Committee (Prepcom) 3 was held in Grand City Surabaya on July 25-27 2016 by UN Habitat III in collaboration with Government of Surabaya and Ministry of Public Works & Housing. More than 4.500 people attended the international conference.
The international conference opens by Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla. Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Mayor of Surabaya Tri Rismaharini, Executive Director of UN Habitat Joan Clos, and Governor of East Java Soekarwo also attended the conference.
Housing and settlement issues are global problem. “50 years ago, 30% of the world population live in urban areas, 70% of them live in rural. Today, the majority of the world population live in urban areas. The increasing population of the city is a sure thing. That becomes a challenge,” said Jusuf Kalla. “Our presence in the city of Surabaya is a very important part for the life of the world community. By simply cooperation we can solve it,” he said.
Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono explains that urbanization is inevitable. “Nowadays urbanization can`t only seen the movement of people from rural to urban areas but also villages that grew into the city. If rural development is successful, the villagers no longer need move to the cities. But if it doesn`t work, obviously the villagers will go to the city”.
Besides the international conference, there is also an exhibition from the delegates of UN Habitat, Indonesia Government, and related organizations.
Regional Center for Community Empowerment on Housing and Urban Development (RC-CEHUD) also participated in Prepcom 3 UN Habitat III collaborate with Research Institute for Housing and Human Settlements, Universitas 17 Agustus 1945, and The institution of Engineers Indonesia organize a workshop about Resilience Planning and Strategic Implementation as a parallel event of Prepcom 3.
